The First DVD Ever
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Awhile ago Shirley and I rented Goodfellas from Blockbuster. Recently I got way into The Sopranos (i.e. watching up to 4 episodes a day) and since I’d never seen Goodfellas, Shirley thought I was a heretic. Since I don’t have a TV we popped it into my computer and sat down, but something just didn’t seem right. First of all there was no “play movie” function anywhere on the menu, anywhere. Turns out we had to go into the “scene selection” menu, THEN hit “play movie” at the bottom of the screen. Then the movie starts and ‘dun dun duuun’ it’s not widescreen, but not only is it not widescreen, it’s letterboxed. Meaning we would have to watch a tiny little box on my monitor surrounded by a big black box. We then went to Shirley’s since she has a traditional 4:3 ratio tv and all is well.
That is, until we get halfway through the movie and half to FLIP THE DISC OVER!? I couldn’t believe it, why didn’t I just rent a freaking laser disc? Furthermore why does Blockbuster still have one of the first DVDs ever in circulation? Anyway, I never actually finished the movie because the second half skipped so bad I have no idea how it ended.
Jeez, life can be real tough sometimes.
