Dept of Energy Poster [RND 03]

As promised, here are images for the second ink pass of the Dept of Energy Promo poster I’ve been working on. Shown above is the second split fountain done in light green to medium green to a dark brown color. The illustration on the block is my polymer plate for the second image. More photos showing the process behind this set-up is behind the link that follows….

This image shows how I had to add cardboard and paper to the block & polymer plate combo in order to get it “type high” for it to print properly on the press. Generally you obtain a metal base from Boxcar Press where once you set your polymer plate on it, it automatically makes it “type high” to print. However, they are very expensive, and in the case of how large this image was, would have been a $1,500 purchase (!!!), so I used the lino block from my first pass and just added the material underneath it until my type high tool shown above, let me know I was right on. (Fortunately it worked-this is the first time I went with this jimmy rigged method. Generally my plate sizes work on the metal bases we have in the shop.)

Next step I had to add packing to get a good impression and ink level on the paper. It took about 6 rounds of adding & deleting packing to get it just where I liked it.

Ok! Ready to move forward with the next round of printing!

Now, the next photo I would generally show you how it all looks, but I have already mentioned that I am a tease and I want you coming back for more. I am certain anyways that you get a good idea of the look with the image you see on the plate & the colors to get you by until then.

Now, there is a third ink pass I have to do to make the printing part complete. It’s going to be on canvas which I am cutting on the guillotine above. Yep. Canvas. Hey, come on! This is DOE and almost every thing we do has a material or technique twist! Therefore, above is a sneak peak to Part Four of this Work In Progress. Stay tuned next week for that!

Very interesting. I once used linocuts to print out a book and had to glue some davey board to make it type high. I printed it in an old Vandercook at Cornish. It was a pain but it came out ok. No split fountains though, that looks great!
How do I get my hands on one of these?

Hey Victor-very cool. Was Jules & Christopher your instructors while at Cornish?

When finished in a few weeks, we’ll be putting them up for sale for $40 plus $5 shipping on a first come basis, limited edition of approx. 100 (I’ll know for sure when done with ‘em) plus signed & numbered.

Just shoot me an email & when they are ready, I’ll shoot you (and all others interested) an email with final details.
